Chemical Peel in Singapore: Read This Before You Commit

Chemical Peel

$68 for Your first session

At Dr. HAACH, our professional doctors specialise in an advanced in-clinic skin procedure that utilises a customised chemical solution tailored to individual needs. This specialised solution is designed to effectively penetrate through the layers of the skin, facilitating the breakdown of old skin cells and enabling the gentle peeling away of the top layers.

This meticulous process not only removes dead skin cells but also addresses superficial pigment concerns, fostering the regeneration of new skin cells and collagen. The result is a complexion that is not only even but also aiming for a smoother complexion and healthier-looking skin.

The skin is the body’s largest organ and is delicate, making it susceptible to damage from various factors such as hormones, diet, and climate. Have you ever woken up, headed to the bathroom for your morning routine, only to be met with the rude shock of a (or *gasp* several) pimple(s) on your cheek? With Singapore hitting a high of 36.2 degrees in 2023’s Asia heat wave, scientists have discovered that our skin is breaking out more often than ever.

In our busy everyday lives, beauty treatments such as chemical peels play a crucial role in maintaining our appearances. Below, we take you through the types of chemical peels, how a chemical peel works, what you should know before opting for the procedure and more.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a beauty procedure whereby chemical solutions containing acids (e.g., salicylic acids, glycolic acids) are applied to the skin, gently stripping away its outermost layers to restore radiance to your face. Chemical peels target a wide range of skin conditions including scars, wrinkles and ageing skin. They can be administered at home or in a clinical setting.

Read on to discover the different types of chemical peels and how the procedure works.

Types of Chemical Peels

Light Peels (Superficial Peels)

Glycolic Acid Peels

The widely recognised for its effectiveness in evening out skin tone and reducing hyperpigmentation, glycolic acid peels can help even out skin tone, reduce hyperpigmentation, add glow and lustre to the skin and smooth fine lines and wrinkles.

Salicylic Acid Peels

Salicylic acid peels are good for gentle skin exfoliation. By penetrating the epidermis (the top layer of the skin), they effectively unclog pores, improve skin tone and texture, and decrease the appearance of melasma.

Jessner’s Solution

Named after its creator dermatologist Max Jessner, Jessner’s solution is a superficial peel that combines salicylic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol with an ethanol base. Its benefits are multifold: it helps to effectively dislodge blackheads, lighten pigmentation, remove the superficial layers of skin, reduce shallow wrinkles and scars, dry out active acne and overall revitalise skin with acne, skin damaged by the sun and ageing skin. Jessner’s solution is often combined with more intense ingredients to produce a medium peel.

Medium Peels & Deep Peels

Trichloroacetic Acid Peels

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are considered medium-depth as they tackle primarily the top layer of the skin (epidermis), with TCA peels of higher concentrations reaching the underlying layer (dermis). If your goal is even skin tone, fewer wrinkles and fewer blemishes, TCA peels may be for you.

Blue Peels

Blue peels obtain their name from their colour. Like trichloroacetic acid peels, blue peels comprise TCA in their formulation. Unlike TCA peels, doctors can control the depth of blue peels and the number of coats applied.

Chemical Peel Treatment Procedure

Many clinics in Singapore offer chemical peel treatment. Here’s how the process works at Dr HAACH.

Before the Procedure

Setting up the appointment for the peel:

  • Inform your doctor of any allergies you may have

1 week prior:

  • Refrain from facial treatments such as facial waxing, laser treatment or any similar procedure

2-3 days prior:

  • Discontinue use of any retinoids, hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide or topical acne medications
  • Use a mild soap for cleansing

During the Procedure

An outpatient procedure, a chemical peel at Dr HAACH can take 20 minutes to two hours, depending on the type of peel performed. To avoid irritation and damage caused by dust and chemicals, do not wear contact lenses during the peel.

Here’s what you can expect during the treatment:

  1. First, your face will be cleansed thoroughly.
  2. Chemical solutions like trichloroacetic acid, glycolic acid, phenol or salicylic acid will be brushed and left on the affected areas of your skin for some time.
  3. You may feel a burning sensation on your skin, followed by a stinging feeling, as the areas with peel turn grey in colour.
  4. A cold compress is applied to neutralise the chemical solution. This subsides the stinging as well.

After the Procedure

To prevent inflammation right after a chemical peel, stay away from alcohol, cigarettes and makeup for at least 24 hours. For at least a week after, avoid hot showers and other direct sources of heat (e.g., hot tubs, saunas). For at least 2 weeks after, avoid using exfoliants, toners and facial treatments like waxing.

Remember to keep your skin moisturised and strengthen its barrier by applying a water-based moisturiser or treatment lotion. Protect your skin with sunscreen of SPF 30+ and above, and wash your face with cool water as opposed to warm water.

Chemical Peel Results

Generally, results from a chemical peel can be seen as early as 7-10 days after the procedure. Since the results are cumulative,  however, more than 1 session is usually required for the best possible results. Dr HAACH recommends 5-10 sessions, with one session conducted per month.

Conditions Treated With Chemical Peels

Chemical peels treat a wide range of skin conditions. The following conditions can potentially be treated or improved with a chemical peel:

  • Pigmentation irregularities: age spots, freckles, melasma (discoloration around the face), sun spots and more
  • 阳光伤害
  • Some types of acne
  • Scarring
  • Rosacea (a skin condition that causes flushing or long-term redness of the face)
  • Lines and creases such as Crow’s Feet
  • Precancerous skin lesions
  • Uneven skin tone/texture or redness
  • Actinic keratoses (scaly spots or patches on the top layer of skin)
  • 皮肤下垂

For advice specific to your condition(s), kindly consult a medical professional.

Advantages Of Chemical Peel

Chemical peels come with several advantages. Not only can they enhance skin texture, they are also able to shrink pores, reduce acne scars and acne, lighten discolouration and sunspots and even fade scars.

It’s crucial to take care of your skin after the procedure. Incorporate our 酵素洁面凝胶 into your skincare routine — comprising various fruit and plant extracts, it gently cleanses your skin while retaining a desirable bounce. To maximise the benefits of the chemical peel, try our Skin Brightening Set: whether you’re at home or on the go, it’s easy to maintain a bright and blemish-free complexion.

Disadvantages Of Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are unable to remove sagging skin, deep scars and deep wrinkles. Deep chemical peels are associated with more potential complications, and the downtime is significantly longer than light and medium peels (up to 2-3 months after the procedure).

Chemical Peel Complications

No medical procedure comes without potential complications. Listed below are some potential complications associated with each chemical peel type.

Superficial & Medium Chemical Peel Complications

  • If you’re allergic to the solution used, you may develop eczema/rash, redness and blisters (remember to inform your doctor of any allergies you have beforehand).
  • In people with darker skin tones, there is a risk for skin discolouration (post peel colour change), a deep brown colour. The colour might take 3-4 months to fade. After the procedure, do stay away from hormone treatments as it might worsen the discolouration. If you are on oral isotretinoin capsules, do not use chemical peels as your skin may burn and darken.
  • In some instances, scars which begin as scabs may form. In people who are carriers of the herpes virus, there is a chance of the infection reactivating.

Deep Chemical Peel Complications

  • Minor complications include swelling, blisters and scars.
  • Although the risk level is low, deep chemical peels comprise phenol, a type of organic compound that could potentially cause heart, liver or kidney damage.

Chemical Peel Risks

Like any other beauty procedure, a chemical peel comes with a number of risks. In particular, people with darker skin tones are at higher risk of developing post peel colour change.

We use the Fitzpatrick scale in determining the type of chemical peel to use.

As seen in the image above, this scale classifies skin by six types:

Type I: white skin that always burns and never tans

Type II: white skin that usually burns and does not tan easily

Type III: darker white skin that may burn slightly and tans

Type IV: moderate brown skin that rarely burns and tans easily

Type V: darker brown skin that very rarely burns and tans very easily

Type VI: black skin that does not burn and tans very easily

For people who fall into types I, II and III, the risk of scarring or changing the colour of their skin is lower than that of people who fall into types IV, V and VI. In general, people with brown or black skin can receive superficial (light) peels safely.

Chemical Peeling at Home vs Chemical Peeling In Clinic

Although chemical peels can be performed at home using store bought products, those are typically superficial-level peels that are only good for a quick pick-me-up. To effectively tackle chronic skin problems, a medium peel or a deep peel is more effective, and those are typically performed in clinics with a medical professional.

Wondering how much a chemical peel costs in Singapore? The answer will be revealed in the next section — stay tuned.

How Often Should You do TCA Chemical Peel?

TCA chemical peels come in different concentrations. The higher the concentration, and the more layers of peels used, the longer the frequency in between treatments.

Using the example of a 13% TCA peel, here’s the recommended frequency based on the number of layers applied:

1 layer: 1 time every 1-2 weeks.

2-3 layers: 1 time every 2-4 weeks.

3-5 layers: 1 time every 4-7 weeks.

In the case of a 18% TCA peel, the recommended frequency might increase to 1 time every 2-3 months.

If you’re confused, don’t worry – your doctor will be able to assess the condition of your skin and recommend a treatment plan accordingly.

How Much Does a Chemical Peel Cost in Singapore?

In Singapore, chemical peels typically cost between $100 to $400 per session. This amount varies based on the amount of experience the doctor has, the type and concentration level of the peel, location of the clinic and other factors.

FAQ

1. Are Chemical Peels Good for Your Skin?

Yes, chemical peels are good for your skin. However, for the best possible results, it’s crucial to follow the aftercare tips above. Due to their strength, chemical peels should be carried out no more than once every month to prevent inflammatory responses (e.g., redness, skin damage).

2. What are Chemical Peels Best For?

Chemical peels can be used to address the following skin conditions:

  • Scars
  • 皱纹
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • 皮肤下垂
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Crow’s feet
  • Acne scars
  • Melasma

3. How Long Will a Chemical Peel Last?

Depending on the type of peel, a chemical peel may last you from anywhere between 1 month to potentially a lifetime.

Light Peel – 1-2 months

Medium Peel – up to 6 months

Deep Peel – a few years (potentially a lifetime)

4. Are Chemical Peels Painful?

No, chemical peels are usually not painful. You may however feel a tingly/prickling sensation that can be uncomfortable for some people.

5. Is Peeling Better Than Facial?

Both peeling and facials come with their own set of advantages. While chemical solutions are used in chemical peels, cleansers and serums are used in a facial (assuming no additional machinery and equipment are used). Typically, facials are gentler on the skin while chemical peels are a more aggressive form of treatment. Ultimately, neither option is better than the other as it’s all subjective.

6. Can You See Results After 1 Peel?

Depending on the type of peel, some results may be seen after 1 peel. Below is a guideline on the number of sessions to attend to get the best results for your skin.

Light Peel – 3-6 sessions

Medium Peel – 2-4 sessions

Deep Peel – 1 session

7. What to Avoid After a Chemical Peel?

After receiving a chemical peel, your skin is especially prone to irritation and inflammation and needs time to heal. As such, it’s advisable to avoid:

At least 24 hours after the procedure

  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Makeup

At least 1 week after the procedure

  • Hot showers
  • Direct sources of heat (e.g., hot tubs, saunas)

At least 2 weeks after the procedure

  • Facial treatments (e.g., waxing, laser treatments)
  • Certain products such as toners and exfoliants

8. Are There Subsidies for Chemical Peels?

Yes, Singaporeans can receive chemical peel treatment at a subsidised rate at NSC (national skin centre). At the time of writing, one session of chemical peel at NSC costs $75 and above, as stated on their official website. However, waiting times are typically long as walk-ins are not accepted. If you’re getting a chemical peel for medical purposes, your insurance provider may cover part of the cost.
